The story of the Mystic River Inn is deeply tied to the rich maritime heritage of the Connecticut shoreline. Located at 3 Gravel Street on the historic west bank of the river, in an area affectionately known as “Captain’s Row”, the Mystic River Inn is a surviving testament to Mystic’s shipbuilding and whaling era.
The original structure was built around 1809 by Captain John Anthony Wolfe. Constructed just steps from what was then a bustling stretch of active shipyards and docks, the location was incredibly practical for a sea captain navigating the early 19th-century maritime trade. Interestingly, in its early days, the building was traditionally referred to by locals as the “Case Bottle House,” a charming nickname earned because its original architectural shape resembled the square wooden cases used to ship liquor bottles across the sea.
Over the past two centuries, as Mystic evolved from a wooden shipbuilding hub into a world-renowned coastal destination, the house evolved with it. The building was expanded, altered, and eventually transitioned into a well-known commercial office space in the mid-20th century, serving the downtown community for decades while slowly losing some of its residential character.
But as of 2026, the property has entered its most exciting chapter yet. The Case Bottle House recently completed a full renovation designed to breathe new life into the historic building. The Mystic River Inn has meticulously preserved the iconic, landmarked 1809 exterior that has watched over the Mystic River for generations, while inside, the centuries of wear and commercial alterations were peeled back and entirely reimagined. The result is a cohesive, modern boutique inn that honors its 200-year-old nautical roots while delivering the highest standard of contemporary coastal comfort.
When you stay with us, you aren’t just visiting downtown Mystic—you are sleeping in a carefully restored and reimagined piece of its rich maritime history.
